HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 18th June

Ed – We’ve got so much to tell you so let’s get on with it eh!

Committee activity

At our recent meeting we discussed new members, club kit, community amateur sports club status, future events, Get Running graduation, volunteering, 10k round up and charity nominations. More on some of this later. We agreed to meet again on 26th July.

The Result Round Up

During the first bank holiday weekend we had an amazing turn out at the mid Sussex Weekend Marathon (too many to list here) with some members competing in all three events over three days to claim an incredible 4 piece medal! 10 miles on Saturday at East Grinstead, then 10 miles on Sunday (SGP and hj Challenge Trophy race) at Haywards Heath and finally a 10k at Burgess Hill. Horsham Joggers men’s team was the overall winner for the weekend races; team of David Jones, Duncan Meades and Matthew Mason. Also a special mention to young Alexa Wedesch Yokom, took part in all three Junior races over the marathon weekend. The 10 mile Challenge Trophy got the Lee-Wright treatment as Rich took the mens award (1.04.05) and wife Jess for the ladies (1.16.31). From the sublime to the ridiculous! Starting with the ridiculous! Early May also saw Horsham Joggers Ultra man Graham Clarke take on the challenge of the 3 forts marathon, a 30 mile very hilly race taking in Cissbury and Chanctonbury rings and Devil’s Dyke finishing in an excellent 4.48.05. Joggers were also travelling to far flung places as Finbarr Cotter competed in the Prague marathon (5.12) and Caroline Bransden and Viv Underhill in the Salzburg half marathon (2.13.59 & 2.14.54 respectively). 10 Joggers also competed at the West Sussex Fun Run league in the Hedgehoppers 5 at Portslade. In the SGP Shelly Garratt (38.41) Natasha Heasman (44.53) and Claire Burrows (51.09) took on the Hastings 5 mile road race. Then it was our day……Horsham 10K! The race was fully booked to the race limit of 500 and on a very hot day 439 runners completed the 2 lap course. Huge thanks go to Race Director Paul Aylett, Race Secretary Claire Miller and Paul’s super team of helpers for making it such a great day! Horsham Joggers came first in both team events thanks to Richard Lee Wright, Simon Perkins, Rob Simmons, Jessica Lee Wright, Emma Walters and Miranda Huisman. Following that Paul Yokom (1.25.33), Mick Duplock and Mike Saunders (1.52.29) went to the Rye 10 and a huge contingent of 42 contributed to a 300+ field at the second running of the Run Wisborough Green 10k with Paul Oakley storming home 3rd in 37.29. On the 2nd bank holiday weekend the scenic Sussex Weald and London 10K races took place with some fantastic results. Then 12 intrepid joggers took on the South Downs Way 100mile Relay on 3rd June under the superb organisation of John Wilcox (complete with clipboard!). Vets team of captain Fiona Clifton, Geoff Pepper, Alan MacLachlan, Crispin Scott, Alan Pettitt and  Brian Frost completed it in 14hrs and 14 mins while ladies team of captain Emma Comber, Jo Terry, Kate Short, Becky Rankin, Beck Elder and Shelly Garratt came in with 14hrs and 23mins on the clock. Congratulations to anyone who ran and represented the club during May and early June.

Summer Handicap 20th June

This coming week sees the new look summer handicap, on Tuesday 20th June, you can either assemble by the pond in Horsham park or jog down from BBHLC for 6.45pm. We will group you all in a similar way to the winter handicap based on your 5k time and then from 7.15 let off the groups to run the Horsham parkrun course, first over the line wins and will receive a trophy at awards night! If it’s a nice evening we can stay down for either a picnic or BBQ, hope to see lots of you there to support this new event! Free parking is available at Horsham Hospital after 6pm or within some local roads.

Runaway weekend

A group of runners are going to Brokenhurst to take part in the New Forest 10miler on Sunday 9th July (http://www.nf10.co.uk/) and the entry closes on 30th June with no entry on the day. Entry is £15 with a UKA number. Why not make a weekend of it with a nearby Parkrun on the Saturday as well!

Barns Green Half Marathon Training

Our favourite local half marathon will take place on Sunday 24 September this year. As usual, we’ll be providing a structured training plan to help you prepare for the race. This year it’s a 13-week programme, with the first Tuesday session on 27th June and the first Sunday run on 2nd July. Click this link for details: Barns Green training Summer 2017

The plan is suitable for runners of all speeds and levels of experience who are already confident over 10k or more. So if you haven’t quite got up to 10k yet, please use the next couple of weeks to add that extra mile or so to your training distance. If you don’t feel confident over this sort of distance yet, you can still join the fun; come and have a word with Coach Fiona before the end of June to discuss an appropriate variations to the plan.

WSFRL Arunners Beach Run – Carb loading!

For those signed up to this race on 12th July, we will be taking orders for a fish and chip supper afterwards along the harbour wall. Just speak to Diane Berry who has kindly offered to take orders and coordinate with the chip shop before and after the race. Orders must be in before the end of Sunday 9th July with money payable on the day. If you can’t hook up with Diane then just email info@hj and we’ll put you in touch.

Ride London Cycle Event

Phil Liberman is looking for Volunteers to help at this year’s Ride London event on Sunday 30th July. You will be based at the Hub at Leatherhead from about 8-3.30pm. We will be helping give put drinks and food to the competitors and it is a really fun and buzzing day! T shirts, caps and merchandise will be provided and lunch is laid on too, plus it earns money for the club! If you are interested email info@hj.

Get Running For 2017 Graduation

Congratulations to our latest recruits who graduated to their first 5k run yesterday at Horsham Parkrun! Leaders Kirsty and Saul were on hand to see them round with James giving encouragement on the side lines. Well done everyone and maybe we can look forward to seeing you prepare for your first 10k in a few months time?

Horsham 10k thanks

Once again the Horsham 10k proved its popularity with a full entry, fabulous feedback on social media and the newspapers and even sunshine! We send our sincere thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help especially the small organising committee charged with delivering a safe, fun and competitive day for all our guests. The provisional date for next year’s race is 20th May so if you think you have something to offer, why not put yourself forward as the new race director!

Also; Alan Law from Alan Law Physiotherapy is coming to BBHLC on the 18th July from 8-9pm after our session to offer a free injury drop in clinic! So if you have any niggles or anything more serious or just want some good old fashioned self preservation advice, please come along! Both companies offer us a 10% on services and are local and Alan is giving his time free of charge for this clinic so please come along and support.

Our very own Gunpowder Trot is coming up on 5th November and we need to fill some key roles as part of the organising group:

  • Start/Finish Supervisor

  • Supplies coordinator

Further roles such as marshalling will be advertised closer to the date. Please keep the date free as we need your support and it takes over 70 people to make this great event happen. Speak to a committee member or email info@hj to get involved.

Club Marathon Ballot Places

Small changes have been made to the way ballot places should be implemented.

These principally apply to club places for the London Marathon.

Eligibility criteria for entry to the ballot for the marathon places

  • You are a first claim member – that means that HJ is the only or the first club you registered with.
  • You have been a HJ member for at least 12 months at the time of the ballot.
  • You received a rejection in the public ballot.
  • You have volunteered to support HJ in one or more capacities in the last 12 months, as at the time of the ballot. The capacity to be determined by the committee and could include, for example, run leader for the Tuesday night runs, helping out on the Summer/Winter Handicaps and Improve Your Time Trial.
  • You have run for HJ in at least two WSFRL or SGP races in 2024 (and six races in 2025 and thereafter).
  • You have not run the London Marathon before.

If you are successful, you MUST

  • Enter the race as a Horsham Jogger and wear a Horsham Joggers race vest as you are representing the club.
  • Help with the organisation of at least one marathon training run session.

HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 6th May

Committee activity

At our recent meeting we welcomed two new members in Sharon Gibson and Gemma Berrill and discussed new joiners, club funds, club kit distribution, member zone orders, forthcoming events, BM/LM marathon – minibuses/pasta party/ballot rules, AGM matters, volunteering and the hj challenge trophy. We agreed to meet again on 14th June. More on some of this later.

The Chairman’s results round up

Saturday 1st April saw 5 teams take part in the Sussex road relays at Christ’s Hospital School, our senior men’s team (Richard Lee Wright, Matthew Anstee Brown, Harry Wilcox, Mal Thornton, Raff Vitale and Matt Mason) finished 16th with the Veterans team (Simon Perkins, Neil Boniface, Steve Wigmore and Pete O’Connell) getting a bronze medal! The Men’s 60’s (Keith Valentine, Steve Wilson and John Dykes) came 7th and the ladies V40’s (Janine Littler, Ali Gormley and Val Purnell) finished 12th with the V50’s (Miranda Huisman, Diane Ferguson and Lorraine Treadwell) a great 5th. On the same day Neil Boniface finished 2nd in the Paddock Wood Half Marathon in 1.08.48 with Finbarr Cotter and Andy Jefford finishing in 2.04.00 and 2.16.17 respectively.

Marathons then took precedence with over 50 HJ’s finishing in the Brighton marathon in very hot conditions and 16 completing the London 2 weeks later. Some great PB’s, first time marathons and new members all acquitted themselves admirably and a special mention to Matt Anstee Brown and Shelly Garratt who achieved “good for age” times for next year!

Parkrun produced 2 notable performances too with Neil running the fastest ever parkrun for a V40 (15.21) and Matt Mason first finishing in the Milan parkrun.

Val Purnell put in a tremendous performance at the British Masters 10K Championship at Gravesend Cyclopark. She finished an amazing 2nd overall and first in the Southern Veterans category taking a silver and gold medal respectively in a time of 48.55. That’s all folks!

Horsham 10k update

We have a full adult entry for our home race on 21st May and more volunteers than you can shake a stick at! Thanks to everyone who has offered to help organise, marshal, meet and greet or bake! You really are what makes this club tick and what makes us Horsham’s friendly running club! Instructions will be sent out on Monday 15th giving details or your role, who to report to and at what time. U16 Junior entries are still available at £4 per runner.

Kit distribution

The new MemberZone is proving to be a phenomenal success with over 200 orders being processed since its launch! However, please remember that all orders are manually processed and the kit distributed by hand, by volunteers mainly on Tuesday club nights or at Parkrun. Please make yourself available to collect your order in person to save us time and you money!

Itchingfield Time Trials

The Itchingfield Time Trial takes place on the 2nd Tuesday in May, June, July and 1st Tuesday in September. The first three start at 7.30pm and the last one at 7pm. If you haven’t tried it before, please jog to the old Itchingfield Primary School as parking is limited, collect a number and pace yourself against an “undulating” 5k road route. Your aim is to improve your time over the 4 time trials with your best 3 times counting towards your total improvement. So if you miss one trial, all is not lost! It’s a great club event, whatever your ability. Prizes are awarded to the top lady and gent who improve their times at the “lavish” HJ awards night later in the year.

Horsham District Council has received a grant for the installation of outdoor gym equipment in Horsham Park. The equipment is intended for use by adults of all abilities and fitness levels. We would like to ensure that the equipment purchased is equipment the community will use and its design and location reflects the community’s opinion as far as possible. We would like as many people as possible to complete the survey so we can consider the answers and suggestions during our planning process. Riverside Walk 2017

You are invited to join Horsham’s 4th Annual Riverside Walk on Saturday 15th July 2017 starting at 10.00 am from the Rugby Club, Hammerpond Road. The complete route is 13 miles but for walkers/joggers with less time or energy, a free, pick-up minibus will be at various locations to take them back to the start. We are walking the route in a clockwise direction. Cold drinks: Chesworth Farm – from 10.40 to 11.15 am. Lunch: Warnham NR – from 12.00 to 2.00 pm. New House Farm café – from 14.15 to 15.30 pm. This year we are asking walkers to consider obtaining sponsorship in aid of Action Medical Research but this is not obligatory and you may like to raise funds in the same way but for another charity. Spring is finally here and we can start to look forward to running in some warmth and sunshine; bring it on! In this issue we have news on the new hj website, the latest race results and achievements as well as events and activities to get you going into the great outdoors.

Marathon Minibuses

We’ve had a few members interested the Brighton and London marathon minibuses (9th and 23rd April respectively) and one kind volunteer to drive the bus to Brighton and back so we now just need a driver for London! You must have category D1 on your licence and will then be insured to drive. We aim to take the stress out of getting runners there and back for a small donation of about £8. Please email info@hj to express an interest. Buses take 13 passengers and we still need 4 more passengers for Brighton and 6 more for London to fill them both up and make this worthwhile. If you’ve asked for a place on the Brighton bus, details will be emailed to you this week regarding timings.

Website? What website?

After an “interesting” conversation during a group run recently, it seems that some members still don’t know that the hj website is here to provide information, links, documents and payment facilities for all club matters. The chat then moved on to committee matters and it appears that not all members know who is on the committee to represent you! Well, while you are reading this, why not also look up the committee profiles? Just hover over “About Us”, click -> “hj committee” and find out who to speak to get your views across.

Latest Race Results and Achievements

A race round up of some of the highlights from the month of March……

On the 6th Kirsty Anstee Brown ran the Cambridge half marathon smashing her personal best to set a mark of 1.50.30 with husband Matty finishing in 1.18.27.

On the 13th at the local Surrey half marathon just turned 50 birthday boy Mikey O’Grady stormed to an impressive finish in 1.34.09 with a large contingent of Joggers also completing the hilly course. On the track Pete O’Connell took a very fine 4th place in the British Indoor Masters 3K at the famous Lee Valley Stadium in 10.50.

The following weekend half marathons were still taking centre stage as Horsham Joggers continued their marathon build up to Brighton and London in April. At Reading Rob Simmons finished in 1.25.42 followed by Stuart Carruthers 1.41.37 Paul Arnold 2.14.10 Lou Johnson 2.05.43 Sally Arnold 2.28.47 Sue Hensman 2.28.54 Ashley Wilkinson 2.35.41 & Deb Weller 2.36.13. At Hastings in very windy conditions it was Stuart Adesilu beating the elements in 1.34.21 Rob Crocker 1.37.25 Raff Vitale 1.38.28 Paul Aylett 1.40.47 Alan Pettitt 1.44.07 Paul Yokom 1.47.28 Janine Littler 1.50.11 Jane Addams 2.53.40 Victoria Saunders 2.57.26 Jenny Boyd 2.58.56. Smaller contingents visited the Hampton Court, Fleet and Badger half marathons, Neil Clarke 2.01.15 Kevin Elvidge 2.28.00 Phyl Weston 1.48.18 Heidi Chaney 2.41.55 Mal Thornton 1.34.54 Mark Gibson 1.40.28 and Beck Elder 1.55.58 all putting in fine performances.

On the same day Neil Boniface continued his superb start to life in the V40 category with a 1st place finish and 6th overall at the hotly contested Eastleigh 10K in 31.36!

Finally, last weekend at the local Mel’s Milers 10K at Christ Hospital school Simon Perkins stormed home 4th out of a field of 348 in 37.31 with Pete O’Connell 38.19 Lucinda Potten 42.50 Johanna Terry 44.18 Laurence Carpenter 44.24 Phil Liberman 45.04 Guy Gilder 46.15 Paul Windust 46.53 Miranda Huisman 47.39 Tom Gaule 48.29 Jim Hawthorne 49.03 Clive Walker 49.06 Simon Holmes 49.10 Geoff Fisher 49.39 Rebecca Ramsey 49.50 Matt Senior 50.42 Kevin Croker 51.13 Ian Nicholson 53.14 Aaron Baker 53.55 Jo Hopkins 53.56 Fiona Dalrymple-Hay 54.29 Paul Arnold 57.29 Richard Barron 58.01 Danielle Moore 58.08 Steph Charman 62.47 Richard Mullans 67.15 Carol Brown 68.03 Edna Clark 68.14 and Susie Millbank 71.13.

Horsham 10k volunteers

We are fast approaching that time when we need your help to deliver our home race on 21st May. It takes over 80 people to set up, bake cakes, marshal, hand out medals and even take chips off the runners shoes! If you can help in anyway, please email info@hj and we’ll be in touch. If you are considering running our 10k, please, please, please make sure that you offer your help before entering.

Also, we are still after a drone to provide some aerial footage of our race. If you have one or you know someone who does, we’d love to hear from you so that we can discuss filming and/or photos on the day of the race. Obviously the operator will need all the relevant permissions etc and most importantly, insurance to fly it above the runners on the rugby fields. Just email info@hj with your details.

Motor Neurone Disease Association and Horsham Junior Parkrun say “Thank you”

We have had a big thank you from Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Horsham Junior Parkrun for our donation to them from the money we raised at the Horsham 10k and Gunpowder Trot in 2016. Well done all who helped make the events a great success!

Summer Pub runs

Summer’s here and the summer pub runs kick off on the 27th April. Go along and join in, you really don’t know what you’re missing, trail running at its very best. Click HERE for the 2017 summer pub run schedule. The runs and walks follow footpaths, bridleways, byways and permissive paths through our wonderful countryside, through woods, across fields, over hills and beside rivers and canals. The runs are usually between 6 and 7 miles. We hope to have two groups one faster than the other; both groups follow a pre-marked route on maps provided by the route organiser, we have not lost anybody yet!

Itchingfield Time Trials

John Dykes has kindly agreed to put these on again this year. The time trials are a fun club event for all club members over the summer period. They take place on the second Tuesday in the month (except Sept) on club night and start from BBH leisure centre with a warm up jog to the old Itchingfield Primary School. Vitality London 10k places with Action Medical Research

The date for the Vitality 10K has been set for 29th May 2017 and members, you can get a discounted place with Action Medical Research

For only a £25 registration fee and with no fundraising commitment, Action Medical Research ask you to raise what you can to support their charity. They will even throw in a free running vest for each runner to write their own messages on. (The standard entry fee is £30, or £28 for club members.)

And the great news is that you can still register your club name and appear on the results for the club. So it’s win – win!

New Trail Running Club in Chichester

A new trail running club in Chichester will be organising regular monthly trail runs and welcome runners of all abilities to join them. It’s free and their runs are delivered by Salomon trained instructors. With runs organised right across West Sussex Karibu hope you might like to run with them as an alternative run to shake up your training and meet new local runners.

To get on their mailing list visit their website (www.karibu.club), hit the Join Us button, select the appropriate fitness level and they will email runs suitable. They also have a Facebook page for updates.

Committee activity

At the recent committee meeting we discussed the usual new membership and club accounts as well as club kit, website updates, new and improved Learn to Run course, club training, up and coming events including the Horsham 10k and encouraging more people to help with various club tasks. We agreed to meet again on 29th March. More on some of this later.

How many people does it take to “run” a running club? Fear not, I am not about to take up a career in stand up comedy! But the answer is more than you might think…..

As the Club grows so does the list of things that need doing to keep the club running to the high standard it does currently. So I would like to appeal to any of you who may have some time to offer your particular skill set to Horsham Joggers. The jobs, some of which are illustrated below range from the very small to single one off projects to being a fully fledged committee member (which actually only involves a meeting every 6 weeks, with as many or as few jobs in between as you can commit to!) or maybe even taking up the Chairman’s job in the future! If you are interested please email info@hj or speak to one of the committee members anytime and thank you in advance for your support.


Free talk on Marathon Training

We are very lucky to have Chris Finill who lives locally to us in Cranleigh to come and give a free talk on Wednesday 1st March. Chris has competed in every London Marathon and will be sharing his experience, and giving out some useful advice and tips.  Physiotherapist Wendy Anne Harrison will also be giving some advice on stretches and warm up. South Downs Way 100 mile Relay –  Saturday 3rd June

Arguably the best ‘running’ day out of the year! We are looking for Horsham Joggers to take part in this “invitation only” event for about 50 teams. Horsham Joggers have been invited once again to enter two teams (of six). This is a relay race over the 97 miles of the South Downs Way, starting at Beachy Head and finishing at Winchester. Each team consists of six runners who each run three non-consecutive legs of the relay. The distance of each leg is somewhere between 4 and 8 miles and you’ll have a good break between each of your 3 runs. Each runner will run somewhere between 15 – 18 miles over the course of the day, almost entirely off road. The team travel between the start/finish points of each leg by minibus. There is a time limit to complete the event, meaning that an average pace per mile of just over 8.5 minutes is required (over the whole distance). In the past we have had teams consisting of a good mix of different paced runners, with some running faster and some slower than the 8.5 m/m average required. Although a fairly tough (it’s hilly!) long day, it is a great event with a lot of team spirit and camaraderie.  Having done it twice I, and I’m sure everyone else who has ever taken part, will confirm that the sense of achievement and fun had is immeasurable. Entry cost is subsidised by the club, the cost per runner is expected to be £25.00 to cover minibus and fuel costs. Website updates

The updated website is almost ready to go live with the addition of our new “Member Zone”! In the very near future, all current members will be receiving an email which will contain details of how to log in to the new Member Zone. Here you’ll be able to purchase club kit, pay your annual hj and UKA subscriptions as well as club entry to all WSFRL races up to 5 days prior to the race and all via your PayPal account. Please keep an eye on your inbox (and junk box) for more details, go to our website, click “Member Zone” and enter the information on the email. We hope to have this all working by 12th March at the latest.

Membership subscriptions

Don’t forget that your annual subs are now due on 1st April to bring them in line with the UKA affiliation subs. You’ll be able to pay these via the new Member Zone on the website. Also, the date for our annual AGM has been confirmed as Tuesday 25th April. More on this next month.

With the AGM just around the corner, now is the time to cast your votes for Jogger of the Year (JOY), Newcomer of the Year (NOY) and new for 2017; Volunteer of the Year (VOY)! The committee will meet again on 29th March to shortlist the noms and select worthy winners.

Get Running for 2017!

The new name for our highly successful Learn to Run course and James, Kirsty, Saul and Claire have kindly volunteered to coach our new recruits from zero to 5k over 10 weeks followed by a new 5 to 10k improvers group after that. Sessions begin on Tuesday 11th April at 7pm and continue every Tuesday/Thursday evening at the club and Saturday morning (yes you read it correctly!) in Horsham Park at 8am so volunteers can still get a Parkrun in afterwards. The cost is £50 for the first 10 weeks and this includes an official HJ T-shirt, joining fee and annual membership. For more info or to express an interest, please email info@hj.

Marathon Minibuses

Yes, it’s that time again when we need to know if there is enough demand for a club minibus to either the Brighton or London marathon. For a small donation of about £8 (TBC) we can take the stress out of getting there and back. Please email info@hj to express an interest in this and we’ll tot up the numbers. Buses take between 14 to 16 passengers and are only viable if we can fill them up!

Challenge Trophy update

Congratulations to all who competed in the first Challenge Trophy race this season at Chichester earlier this month and especially to first hj Male, Neil Boniface and first hj female, Lucinda Potten. Full results for the other 5 year age categories will be revealed at the awards presentation later this year. The next Challenge Trophy race is the Haywards Heath 10 mile on Sunday 30th April.

Calling all dronies! Do you have a drone or do you know someone who does? We’d love to hear from you so that we can discuss aerial filming and photos on the day of the race (21st May 2017). HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 16th January

Happy New Year folks and a big welcome to our new members and subscribers! What do you mean; you’d forgotten all about the festive season as soon as the credit card bill landed? Summer is coming so look on the bright side!

Committee activity

Spring marathon training

This is now three weeks in and already up to 13 miles. Numbers are huge each week and we even ran out of jelly babies! If you are participating, make sure that you arrive in good time for the pre-run briefing as we leave at 9am sharp! Please congregate on the pavement to keep the car park access clear and don’t use the surroundings as a toilet! Wear hi-viz clothing and prepare for all eventualities by taking layers to put on if you get cold (you may be comfortable in your vest at the start but what if there’s a medical emergency or RTA to deal with along the way?). Raff is still collecting a list of volunteers to organise the routes and water stops. Remember these are self guided training runs, with maps and instructions. Please reccy the route or stick with others if you don’t know where to go.

HJ Challenge Trophy changes for 2017

Following last month’s announcement that the Challenge Trophy awards would be streamlined to 10 year age categories we received lots of feedback highlighting how this would impact individuals who are nearing the top end of their age bracket and how competing with runners who may be 8 or 9 years their junior would affect them. As a result, the committee has agreed to retain the 5 year age categories for Challenge Trophy awards (SGP and WSRFL will still become 10’s). The first event is the Chichester 10k on 5th Feb. We also felt that the awards evening was such a success in December that this should become a focal point for club funding instead of a typical Christmas party.

Club Social Scene

With over 500 members and such a diverse mix of individuals, finding the right blend of organised club social events has proved tricky recently, what with the ever changing club dynamic and the age range that we have to provide for. However, this seems to be evolving into a self-managed thing recently where small groups put on get togethers instead. We had a few small groups attending Christmas meals, others celebrating New Year together and recently a group social evening with drinks and games at the Shelly Arms pub in Broadbridge Heath. We feel this demonstrates how running unites people, not just pounding the pavement together but in a social way and are keen to see this develop further, so if you have something going on with your club buddies and would like to us promote it, just post to Facebook or email to info@hj and we’ll see if we can help.

Summer “party”

Following on from the social events theme, we were so pleased with the success of the post Horsham Round BBQ last August that we would like to expand on it instead of a traditional Christmas party (the awards night can substitute this). So please save the date; August Bank Holiday will continue to see the running of the Horsham Round and we will step up the after-BBQ into a bigger gathering for all members whether running The Round or not. More details to follow closer to the time.

Club Kit

All hoodies ordered before Christmas have now been delivered and you all look great in them! Official club vests and T-shirts are still available from Mike at Up & Running in Horsham. Please remember that you will need to be wearing them in a race to qualify for points and prizes.

Website updates

We’ve been working feverishly over recent months to develop the website into something a bit more user friendly and suitable for E-commerce so that payments can be made for subs, kit, races and socials etc. We currently have an updated website on trial and hope to be able to “go live” in the near future so watch this space and your inbox for details of how to login to our new “Member Zone”! Also new for 2017 are profile pages for each committee member (well those who have sent them in so far!) which make for a bit of light reading 😉

Club donations

With some profits from last year we have been fortunate enough to make two donations this month; £300 goes to Horsham Junior Parkrun to help them set up their regular weekly timed run and another £300 to the West Sussex North branch of the MND Association in support of our long term member, Andy Spriggs who suffers with the disease.

HJ Winter Handicap – 6th Dec

For those who have never run the handicap race before, it’s two laps (about 4.5 miles in total) starting at BBHLC and then around Hills Farm, Blackbridge and Guildford Roads with start times staggered to suit your 5 or 10k time so the steady runners leave first and the whippets leave last! If we get our timings right, everybody will finish at the same time!

Awards Night and pre-Christmas social evening – 6th Dec

Following the handicap race we will be holding the annual awards presentation and a pre-Christmas drink in the bar. Why pre-Christmas you may cry? Well, it’s a busy time of the year for most and, with venues getting rather pricey with questionable service(!), we intend to arrange something a little bit special for you in the New Year instead of the traditional Christmas party! Better value, better attendance and hopefully better for everyone! Awards will presented for the four Challenge Trophy events, Itchingfield time trial, SGP and WSFRL 8’s, winter handicap and all important draw for Brighton and London marathon places via the club ballot!

Gunpowder Trot – Thanks and Feedback

A huge thanks to everyone involved in putting on the Gunpowder Trot last month. We have had some fantastic feedback from several clubs, for example, this from Henfield Joggers:

“I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say what a fantastic event it was this morning. Lovely course, nice variety to it and a nice mix of scenery, hills and flat. Great marshalling all the way from coming into Horsham and the car parks and around the course – very encouraging and very clear with directions. Then fantastic cake to finish! A big thumbs up all round from all at Henfield.”

It’s great to know that runners enjoyed the event, but we want to know about the experiene of our volunteers too. West Sussex Fun Run League Stats

127 Horsham Joggers took part in the 17 races throughout the 2016 season and 2 members completed all 17! 1 member completed 16 races, 6 completed 11 races, 5 completed 10 races, 5 completed 9 races and 30 completed 8. So after all that, we finished 7th in the League. Interestingly, the average number of Horsham Joggers per race was 26 compared to Burgess Hill Runners with 61, Saint & Sinners 42, Hove Hornets 31 and Portslade Hedgehoppers with 29 per race.

So it’s all to play for in 2017 and the league starts again on Sunday 1st January with the aptly named “Hanover 5”! All entries are £3 and need to be made via league rep, Jenny Boyd or by bank transfer to the HJ account by Friday 23rd December and there will be no late registrations after 11:00am on the day, as they want to get both races started on time.

Spring marathon training

Coach Fiona has kindly re-jigged the schedule which will start on Monday 2nd January (yes, it’s a bank holiday!) with 10miles up the beautiful mount Langhurst and back. Santa Run at Brinsbury College

My name is Abbie, I work for a charity based in West Sussex called Building Heroes. I am organising a Santa run event on the 17th December 2016 at Chichester college, Brinsbury campus to raise funds for our courses. It is a 5k course with an optional mini mile for children. Alongside the run on the 17th, I am arranging a Christmas market to help increase funds and awareness. The market is fun for all ages, with over 40 stalls and food and drink. Building Heroes was formed in 2013 to help military veterans transition into civilian life. We do this by, offering veterans a free 5-week residential property maintenance course. This year we established our training partnership with Chichester college who deliver our course. Since then we have trained over 50 veterans. Throughout the programme we work with the veterans to identify an appropriate career path for them whether it’s employment, self- employment or further training. Race vests and T-shirts

We are expecting a new batch from Simitar Sports any day now but current stock is still available from Up & Running in Horsham for the meagre sum of £20 and £22 respectively. But why bother? Well, aside from looking like part of team hj at all events, you do stand a chance of disqualification or missing out on team medals if you are not bedecked with hj kit in a championship or league event. Unfortunately this happened to one member at the recent Barn Green Half who could have walked away with a team medal from Sussex AA had they been wearing official club kit!

HJ Challenge Trophy changes for 2017

The four races will remain the same as this year – Chichester 10k (Feb – new course!), Haywards Heath 10 miles (May), Barns Green Half (Sept) and Steepdown Challenge (Oct) but the committee felt that these races are now so successfully attended that we will be awarding trophies for each 10 year age category (not 5 years as before) from senior male/female to V70. Also the SGP 8 and WSRFL 8 awards will now become 10’s just to give you even more effort before grabbing a gong!

Yep, this article is still here because only a few kind souls have stepped up to the plate and, following the announcement that we will be flying solo next year, we still need to put a new team together so if you are able to volunteer for some of the key roles like, Chief Marshal, Sector Marshal, Clerk of the Course, Set up leader, Breakdown leader etc etc, then please email us at info@hj. There are small tasks and large tasks to be coordinated in the New Year so any offers of help will be appreciated. With a membership of over 500, we must be able to find another half a dozen people to help with this, surely?

BRIGHTON MARATHON PLACES- Sunday 9th April 2017

England Athletics registered athletes can now apply for a guaranteed entry into the 2017 Brighton Marathon. Entries are limited per club according to the number of first claim registered members. If any affiliated club member is interested in applying for one of these places please email the club mailbox info@horshamjoggers.co.uk. The club has been allocated 6 places (calculated on the affiliated membership) and if there are more than 6 applicants a ballot will be held with the usual club rules applying.
Entry into the Brighton Marathon costs £69.50 and entries must be applied for through the club secretary. Only requests to enter from club secretaries will be accepted.

HJ’s Gunpowder Trot (WSFRL) 6th Nov

Thank you to all those who have volunteered to help at the Gunpowder Trot.  We’ve received some great feedback about the new course from those of you who joined Fiona Clifton and Mark Smee yesterday for a trail run.  The course really shows Horsham in a fantastically scenic light, and it’s no push-over either!

Victoria Saunders, the race organiser will be emailing all volunteers this week to let you know your role and when/where to report on Sunday 6th November.  If you haven’t heard from Victoria by Friday 28th October, please e-mail info@horshamjoggers.co.uk or speak to Jenny Boyd at a club night.

Please do not slice cakes, so we can cut cakes to consistent sizes on the day.  Jenny Boyd, our WSFRL rep has already had a message from another club saying they are looking forward to our cake offerings – we have a high reputation in the cake stakes to maintain, so thank you in advance to all our fantastic bakers!

HJ’s Legendary Quiz Night – 18th Nov

Eggheads, start brushing up your general knowledge as, following a slight hiatus from the calendar last year, the legendary quiz night is back on Friday 18th November (7pm for 7.30 start) with new quiz masters but a similar format. Entry is now open for teams of six (max 14 teams allowed) with at least one person in each team being an hj member. If you would like to enter a team or six, please email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk listing your team members and team name (if known) and pay the £3 per person entry fee (£18 per team) by bank transfer (sort code- 20-23-97 A/C-20523984 Ref- *your name* QUIZ) or by cash on the night if you prefer. You’ll receive an email confirmation and a number between 1 and 14 for your team which means you are in! It’s a great social event with a good few laughs and bit of competitive rivalry to boot! BBHLC Track 5k for Heart UK

Sam has contacted us about her forthcoming run………………… I am the group exercise coordinator for Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.  I am emailing to let you know that on Sunday 30th October we will be hosting a 5K run around our athletics track to music for the Heart UK charity.  The event will start at 9.30am with a group warm up  followed by the run. The entrance fee will be £5 per person with all of this going to the charity. We are looking to make this a fun friendly family event to raise some money for a worthy cause.  I feel sure that some of your members would fancy stretching their legs a little on a Sunday morning for a worthy cause! Riverside Walk Improvements

The Riverside Walk Project Team have applied to AVIVA for a grant to carry out more work on the route. To stand a chance of being awarded the grant they first need to win a voting competition and your help is needed. Horsham 10k help

Following the announcement that we will be flying solo next year, we still need to put a new team together by the end of 2016 so if you are able to volunteer for some of the key roles like, Chief Marshal, Sector Marshal, Clerk of the Course, Road Restriction leader, Set up leader, Breakdown leader etc, then please email us at info@hj. HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 18th September 2016

Lots to talk about this time but first and apology; if you receive this newsletter by email then you probably also received a random email about “Learn to Run” a few days ago. Sorry about this but the editor was meddling with the website controls and clicked the wrong bit to publish it to all you lovely people instead of just editing it for the future. Sorry about that. WSFRL block payment update

Following last month’s news that WSFRL races must now be pre-entered by hj block booking or individually on the day, there were inevitably a few teething problems and so we have streamlined the instructions as follows. Pre-entry to any future WSFRL race can be made in two ways;

1) Payment of £3 per race in cash to Jenny Boyd by the Tuesday evening before the race. You can pay for multiple future races in one go if you want to.

OR

2) Payment of £3 by bank transfer to Horsham Joggers by the Tuesday evening before the race. Again you can pay for multiple future races in one go if you want to. This option requires you to enter our bank details (account no: 20523984 – sort code: 20-23-97) with your name and the race(s) that you are entering as the reference (for instance; Peter Perfect – Hickstead, Steepdown) followed by the amount (in this example, £6).

Please note that only a payment secures your place and it takes time for the volunteers to process these details and make the block booking before the race. Unfortunately we can’t accept late payments, emails or facebook messages pleading for a place. Latecomers will have to enter on the day (subject to availability) and pay the slightly higher entry fee.

Please note that our home WSFRL race is fast approaching (6th Nov) and we will soon be calling for volunteers to help out on the day.

Barns Green Half Marathon – 25th September

Our favourite, local half marathon is just one week away and again it promises to be well attended by team hj. The addition of a new 10k route this year is bound to draw in the crowds so make sure you arrive there in good time for the team photo at 9.45am at the hj gazebo on the field wearing your official race shirts/vests or hoodies.

Looking for a PB at the BG 1/2 this year? Perhaps the table below will help you pace yourself? Just select a target finish time from 1:30:00 to 2:20:00 in the left hand column, make a note of the split times and check them against your watch as you pass each mile marker on the course. Obviously this is a theoretical, even pace and doesn’t allow for the terrain so you may want to bank some time on the downhill bits to spend on the uphill bits! Good Luck!!

Winter Headtorch Runs

Mike De Frateschi (Up & Running) is organising these trail runs again this year. Every Thursday at 7pm throughout the winter from various venues. They have effectively taken over from the Winter Pub Run’s so if you want to be notified of when and where to meet each week, please email horsham@upandrunning.co.uk to be included on the mailing list. Next week’s run will be from the Sussex Oak, Warnham.

Goodwood Cross Country relay – 1st October

The relays are held on Goodwood Race course (opposite the Grandstand) PO18 0PS. The course is on grassland and footpaths and if you are interested in joining a team please contact Pete O’Connell by email: purpledrummer@sky.com

London to Brighton cycle ride

On Sunday 11th Sept our blind runner, Mick Duplock, completed this gruelling tandem cycle ride. If you want to support his charity fundraising then please use the link within his cycling partners story below.

We had a great ride with wonderful weather.  On Saturday it rained most of the day, but Sunday was stunning – warm, sunny, dry and little wind.  We started early – left home at 6.15, and began cycling at 8. Lunch stop was at Turner’s Hill – good food, well organised.  Together, our sponsorship was about £375. Thank you so much for digging deep.  CVM are most appreciative ***LINK***http://www.doitforcharity.com/MickD.  

Skyline with DoItForCharity, said that the whole event with 4000 cyclists, (ages about 12 to 80). Over 300 different charities were represented on the day and a staggering one million pounds raised so thank you.  That was the longest ride that Mick has ever done.  No punctures, no mechanicals; one near miss with a hedgerow after another cyclists was turning right onto a footpath. The toughest part of the ride was the 1 mile climb up Ditchling Beacon, which we did without walking, keeping going in 1st gear – we did wonder if we would make it. We saw and spoke to 5 other tandem pairs.  No other blind riders though.
